How to take care of your RV batteries

RVs are a wonderful investment whether you enjoy leisurely vacations or need to travel long distances in general. They can be, quite literally, your home-away-from-home, so it is important to maintain your RV as best as possible and your RV battery is no exception to this rule!

Proper battery care is one way to avoid unnecessary repairs and purchases. Understanding your RV battery is a great pocket of knowledge that will benefit you for years to come.

What is an RV battery?

An RV has two batteries – the starter battery and the house battery.

The starter battery, like a car battery, gives the RV a sudden energy spurt to get the engine running. The house battery – or deep cycle battery – gives the RV energy, but at a slower pace.

As a storage center for electricity, RV house batteries provide a steady stream of electric currents when in use. These batteries are specifically designed to be used for an extended period of time because they are meant to run and maintain RV amenities such as electrical outlets, stovetops, lights, etc.

The lifespan of your batteries depends on the care you put into them.

Charge up

Make sure you properly charge – and discharge – your batteries between cycles. Batteries that do not get the proper charge times can start to produce troublesome sulfate residue on the battery plates which will eventually crystalize and damage the battery entirely.

Routine clean

Don’t let your RV battery build up gunk before you decide to clean it. Make sure the terminal connections and clamps are routinely checked and properly cleansed so they continue to do their jobs effectively. (Wire brushes are great for removing corrosive material!)

Storage

Always make sure the battery is clean before storing it away. Charge the battery fully and double-check the fluid levels to make sure the electrolyte solution is maintained. You want to store the battery in a cool, dry place – avoid temperatures that cause moisture or can freeze your battery.

Maintaining your RV battery is the best way to prevent expensive repairs. Prevention is key when it comes to enjoying the RV lifestyle to its fullest. Taking time to care for all aspects of your RV will create less stress and more gratifying experiences.
