AGM Battery Safety Handling

An AGM battery is a low maintenance battery that is sealed and valve-regulated. It doesn’t require any watering service and can be placed on the side or in an upright position. AGM batteries are also constructed with heavy-duty plates, premium self-sealing valves, top lead connections, and absorbent glass mat separators.

These features ensure moisture is retained within the AGM battery during operations. Moreover, it would be best if you did not open the valves in AGM batteries since it relies on a sealed design. Doing so voids the warranty and damages the product.

However, while this battery is low-maintenance, it requires a periodic effective charging service and regular inspection to prevent wear and tear. Below are some guidelines that can help you understand the operation, care, and characteristics of AGM batteries to utilize its advantages fully.

Inspection and handling

1. Upon receiving your AGM battery or new equipment fitted with it, examine the battery for signs of impact or moisture. If there is any indication of damage in shipment, notify your battery supplier and make a damage report.

2. Charge your AGM battery in a well-ventilated area before using it. Additionally, ensure the charger used matches the battery application.

3. You can store your AGM batteries for up to a year before maintenance is required. However, ensure the battery is fully charged before storage and keep it dry and clean. You can store it at temperatures below 80oF/27oC without affecting its integrity.

Extra precautions also need to be taken to ensure your AGM battery is free from impact and any connections that might cause parasitic loads.

4. You can recycle your AGM battery by returning it to an authorized disposal agent.

Maximizing your investment

You can measure AGM batteries’ life in cycles whereby one full cycle represents a fully charged battery followed by a discharge period. Ensure you recharge your battery immediately after a duty cycle discharge, since failure to do so may result in permanent damage.

Also, allow your battery to cool down for 6 hours after a regular charging service.
