5 Facts about AGM Batteries every racer should know

Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) batteries were manufactured for military use back in the 1980s. These were high-performance sealed acid batteries with awesome durability in extreme conditions. Over the years, though, AGM batteries have found use in many other automobiles and transport equipment, such as boats, RVs, and racing cars. If you are a racer, take a look at these five facts about AGM batteries.

1. They are truly maintenance-free

One of the best things about AGM batteries is that they require zero maintenance. They also do not need to be watered from time to time. This is because the electrolyte is stored in a suspension state rather than in liquid form. Since there is minimal gassing and no free liquid, AGM batteries perform better in general than their flooded counterparts, which are quite hard to maintain.

2. They are quite sensitive to being overcharged.

Like other sealed and gelled racing batteries, AGM units aren’t immune to the risks of overcharging. Overcharging has been known to negatively affect the performance and life of the battery. To be safe, keep the float charge at 2.25–2.3V/cell while going considerably lower during summer temperatures.

3. They are costly

Compared to standard deep cycle and wet cell batteries, AGM cells have a high price point. But if you measure this against their long life expectancy, robustness, durability, and better performance, they are worth every penny.

4. They can achieve multiple roles

Apart from starting batteries, AGMs can be used as standby systems for powered systems or in deep cycle applications. If you want to go on a camping race trip, they will come in handy.

5. They have a long shelf life

If you take care of your AGMs well, they can last up to five years and beyond. If you know how to properly handle and care for your race car battery, it can give you service for up to ten years.

An AGM battery can take your racing career or passion to a whole new level. The trick is to give it the tender love and care it deserves.
