Don’t let a dead RV battery ruin your summer fun

You’re boondocking deep in the woods, far away from the hustle and bustle of city life when it happens. Your RV battery dies. That sure puts a damper on things. Now you can either drive to the nearest town and try to find a new battery or you can follow these tips and avoid the problem altogether.

Always have a backup.

A backup RV battery is essential, especially if you are boondocking. The last thing you want is to be stuck in the middle of nowhere, enjoying the peace, only to have to drive into town and spend the better part of a day finding a battery so you can get back up and running. And if you can’t find a replacement, you’re stuck. It is always a good idea to think ahead and plan for any unforeseen problems that might impact your vacation and put a damper on your fun.

Know the signs of a failing RV battery.

Most RVs will give you a few signals when they have a failing battery. In many travel trailers and motor homes, you might notice that the lights will begin to dim. Sometimes they may flicker as well. You might find that the power to your appliances is decreased and they may not work properly. If you notice these things occurring, check your battery connections and make sure you have a good charge or you might find yourself in the dark.

Keep a portable charger.

In some cases, a portable charger may be a good vacation partner. There are several different kinds.

* Converter charger – Converts 120v of shore power into 12V of DC power. You can charge your battery while you are plugged in at a site.

* Inverter charger – Like the converter charger, but when you don’t have shore power it converts 120 v AC from the battery 12v.

* Solar-powered charger – Powered by solar panels.

* Generator – provides power directly to the battery.
